Frequently asked questions

At Kindred Quilters Longarm Quilting Studio, we believe in transparency and making the quilting process as smooth as possible. We’ve gathered the most common questions our customers ask, along with our expert advice, to help you prepare your project and understand our services better.

What quilting service should I choose?

For most quilts, Edge-to-Edge Quilting is the perfect choice. It provides a beautiful, consistent finish while allowing your piecing and fabric choices to remain the focus.

Semi-Custom Quilting is ideal if you'd like a different quilting design in the quilt center and borders.

Custom Quilting is best suited for heirloom quilts, show quilts, or quilts where the quilting itself becomes a major design feature. It is more time-intensive, and each project is accepted individually.

Can I mail my quilt?

Yes! You are welcome to mail your quilt to Kindred Quilters Longarm Studio.

When your quilt is finished, it will be carefully packaged and returned to you.

Shipping is charged at the actual cost charged by the carrier—there are no additional handling fees.

What thread do you use?

I always use my own high-quality quilting thread.

Unless otherwise requested:

  • The same thread colour is used on both the top and bobbin.
  • Thread colours are carefully selected to blend with and complement your quilt.
  • Special thread requests are welcome and will be evaluated based on the quilt fabrics, batting, and overall design.
  • Additional thread colour changes are $5 each.

What is your turnaround time?

Typical turnaround for Edge-to-Edge quilting is: 10–14 business days. Turnaround for Semi-Custom and Custom quilting varies depending on the project.

Do you offer rush quilting?

Yes.

Rush quilting may be available depending on my schedule and the time of year.

Rush service is $50 additional.

Can I provide my own batting?

Absolutely.

Please ensure it is:

  • Large enough
  • Of good quality
  • Labelled with your name
  • Marked at the top edge

If it is too small, I can provide batting from my inventory or wait for replacement batting.

Do you offer binding services?

Yes.

I offer:

  • Attach binding to one side: $0.16 per linear inch
  • Complete machine binding: $0.30 per linear inch

Binding must be:

  • Supplied by the customer
  • Cut to 2½ inches
  • Pressed before drop-off

Will my quilt come back perfectly square?

Every effort is made to return a beautifully finished quilt.

However, longarm quilting cannot correct construction issues.

If your quilt top is not square when it arrives, it cannot be expected to return perfectly square after quilting.

Are there additional charges?

Preparation work not completed before drop-off is billed at:

$30/hour

Additional charges may include:

  • Quilt preparation
  • Thread colour changes ($5 each)
  • Turning the quilt for special border quilting ($30)
  • Rush service ($50)

If I identify any additional preparation needed before quilting, I will contact you to discuss the work required. Whenever possible, you will have the opportunity to complete the preparation yourself to avoid additional charges.

I'm entering my quilt in a quilt show.

Congratulations!

If your quilt is entered in a show, please credit

Jill Graveland, Kindred Quilters Longarm Studio as the quilter.

I'd also love to celebrate your success! If you send me a photo of you with your quilt (and ribbon, if applicable) along with permission to share it, I'll send you a $10 gift certificate as a thank-you.
